How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture works with our innate energy, called qi (or ch’i), to promote the body's natural ability to heal itself.  This vital life force, or qi, circulates throughout the body along specific pathways called meridians. These meridians provide nourishment to not only the main organs and physiological systems, but also to one’s mental, emotional and spiritual processes. Since we cannot separate the mental/emotional/spiritual realms from the physical, the whole person is affected by the energy flow in the meridians.

Chi must flow freely and in just the right volume, for us to feel our best. An obstruction in the flow of chi along any of these pathways is like a dam backing up, resulting in too much energy in one meridian and too little in another. When we are ill, be it physical, psychological, or emotional, it is the quality and quantity of the flow of qi energy that is impaired. Acupuncture unblocks the obstructions in the meridians, thereby restoring qi to a balanced flow. Health is dependent upon the restoration of qi energy.
